The ₹78,000 Solar Subsidy*, Explained in Simple Words

*The subsidy is for residential homes only. Your own house, with the electricity connection in the owner's name. Shops, offices and factories can install solar too, but without this subsidy.

Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the central government pays a big part of your rooftop solar cost: ₹30,000 for a 1 kW system, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and ₹78,000 for 3 kW or bigger. Some states add their own money on top. Uttar Pradesh adds up to ₹30,000 more. The money goes directly into your bank account after the system is installed and checked. It is for residential homes with sanctioned load up to 10 kW.

How much do you get?

Central PM Surya Ghar subsidy plus the Uttar Pradesh state subsidy, by system size
System sizeCentral subsidy*Uttar Pradesh subsidy*Total subsidy*
1 kW₹30,000₹15,000₹45,000
2 kW₹60,000₹30,000₹90,000
3 kW or more₹78,000₹30,000₹1,08,000

*For residential homes only. The central amount stops rising at 3 kW (₹78,000 maximum) and the UP state amount at 2 kW (₹15,000 per kW, ₹30,000 maximum), so 3 kW is where a UP home gets the full ₹1,08,000.

Important: The prices, subsidy and savings shown here are illustrations only, to help you plan. Your final system size, payable amount, subsidy eligibility and net-metering approval are confirmed after a roof survey and DISCOM or PM Surya Ghar portal approval.

The process, step by step

  1. Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in using the consumer number printed on your electricity bill.
  2. Wait for approval. Your electricity company checks that your connection can take solar (a few days to four weeks).
  3. Pick an empanelled installer. Only government-registered vendors qualify. This is where Zsolar helps you compare verified options for free.
  4. Installation. 1 to 3 days of actual work, using approved (ALMM-listed) panels.
  5. Net meter fitted and inspected by your electricity company.
  6. Subsidy lands in your bank account, usually a few weeks after inspection.

Documents you will need

Latest electricity bill, Aadhaar card, proof that you own the house, a photo, and a bank account linked to Aadhaar. Your installer normally helps upload everything.

Common questions

Kya subsidy sabko milti hai?

It is for homes only. Your own house, with an electricity connection in your name and a sanctioned load of up to 10 kW. Shops and factories can still go solar, but without this subsidy.

Does the money really come to my bank account?

Yes. After your system is installed and net metering is done, the government transfers the subsidy directly into your Aadhaar-linked bank account. No installer, agent or website touches it.

How long does the whole process take?

Typically 45–90 days from applying on pmsuryaghar.gov.in to money in your account. Most of that is approval and inspection time, not the installation itself (which takes 1–3 days).

Why do some applications get rejected?

The usual reasons: panels that are not on the government ALMM list, a system bigger than your sanctioned load, a bank account not linked to Aadhaar, an installer not empanelled with your DISCOM, or incomplete documents on the portal.

Can I get a bigger system than 3 kW?

Yes, up to your sanctioned load (max 10 kW for the scheme). But the central subsidy stays capped at ₹78,000, so the extra kilowatts are at full price. They still pay for themselves through bill savings.

Solar words made simple

kW (kilowatt)

The size or power of a solar system. Think of it like the engine size of a car. A 3 kW system is the most common home size. It needs about 300 sq ft of open roof.

Unit (kWh)

What your electricity bill counts. 1 unit = running a 1,000-watt appliance for 1 hour. If your bill says 300 units, a system making 340 units a month covers all of it.

DISCOM

Your electricity supply company. The one that sends your bill. In UP these are MVVNL, PVVNL, PUVVNL, DVVNL and KESCO. They approve your solar application and fit the net meter.

MNRE

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The central government ministry that runs the PM Surya Ghar solar scheme.

UPNEDA

The UP state agency for renewable energy. It manages the state's extra solar subsidy and vendor registration in Uttar Pradesh.

Empanelled vendor

An installer officially registered with the government/DISCOM. Your subsidy is released ONLY if an empanelled vendor installs your system. This is the single most important thing to check.

ALMM / DCR panels

The government's approved list of solar panels (ALMM), made in India (DCR). Subsidy is paid only for panels on this list. If a quote looks too cheap, the panels may not qualify.

Net metering

A special two-way meter. Power you use comes in; extra solar power goes out to the grid and is subtracted from your bill. You pay only the difference.

Gross metering

For businesses: instead of using your solar power, you sell ALL of it to the grid at a fixed rate and keep buying power normally. Allowed in UP for 1 kW to 2 MW systems.

DBT

Direct Benefit Transfer. The subsidy money goes straight from the government into your bank account. Nobody in between, including us.

Sanctioned load

The maximum power your electricity connection is approved for (printed on your bill). Your solar system cannot be bigger than this, and the scheme covers loads up to 10 kW.

RCC roof

A normal flat concrete roof. The ideal surface for solar panels. Tin and sloped roofs also work with special mounting frames.
